Mongolia, with its sprawling landscapes and harsh climate, has long grappled with the complexities of building and maintaining conventional telecommunications infrastructure. In urban centers and remote areas alike, the need for dependable, high-speed connectivity has grown exponentially, driven by the increasing digitalization of daily life and business operations.

Background

Mobicom, at the forefront of this digital revolution, recognized that traditional methods were no longer sufficient to meet the rapidly evolving needs of their customers. The company needed a solution that could not only bridge the digital divide but also withstand the unique challenges posed by Mongolia’s environment.

Most immediately a high capacity link was needed for event related activities and to cope with a network outage due to fiber breaks. Mobicom’s journey to improve connectivity involved the following obstacles:

  1. Geographical Constraints: Mongolia’s vast, often rugged terrain made the deployment of traditional fiber optic cables both costly and time-consuming.
  2. Climate Challenges: Extreme weather conditions, from scorching summers to frigid winters, frequently damaged existing infrastructure, leading to service interruptions.
  3. Rapid Response Needs: Events and temporary installations demanded quick setup of high-capacity links, something traditional solutions struggled to provide.
  4. Disaster Resilience: The need for a robust backup solution in case of fiber breaks or other network outages was paramount.
Objectives and Technical Details:

Faced with these challenges, Mobicom set out to find a solution that could:

  • Provide high-capacity connectivity (up to 10 Gbps)
  • Enable rapid deployment for events and emergencies
  • Offer a reliable alternative in case of fiber breakages
  • Withstand Mongolia’s unique environmental challenges
Deployment: Embracing Wireless Lasercomms

After careful consideration, Mobicom partnered with Transcelestial to implement their CENTAURI wireless laser communication technology. The solution promised to deliver what was previously thought impossible: fiber-like speeds without the need for physical fiber deployment.

The installation process was remarkably swift, with links being set up and ready for service within a day – a stark contrast to the weeks or months required for traditional solutions used in the past. Getting high bandwidth available at close to 3km distances provided Mobicom a good alternative for temporary connectivity and a solution to restore services for any fiber breaks quickly and efficiently.

Results:

The impact of the new laser communication system was immediate and far-reaching:

  1. Rapid Deployment: Event organizers could now rely on high-speed connectivity set up in a matter of hours, enhancing the experience for attendees and enabling live streaming of cultural events to the world.
  2. Disaster Resilience: In areas prone to natural disasters or accidental fiber cuts, Mobicom could now restore services quickly and efficiently, minimizing downtime for critical communications.
  3. Urban Connectivity: In rapidly growing urban areas where laying fiber was challenging, laser links provided a quick solution to meet the surging demand for high-speed internet.
  4. Rural Empowerment: Remote communities, previously underserved, gained access to high-speed internet, opening up new opportunities for education, telemedicine, and economic growth.
  5. Cost-Effective Expansion: The smaller footprint of CENTAURI units on poles and towers reduced leasing costs, allowing for more widespread network expansion.

Encouraged by the success of the initial deployment, Mobicom is now working with Transcelestial’s in country partner BCT LLC (Best Computers) to integrate more CENTAURI links into their network. This expansion aims to further enhance network resilience and enable rapid deployment for events across the country.

For the people of Mongolia, this technological leap means more than just faster internet. It represents a bridge to the global digital economy, empowering businesses, educators, and individuals to connect, innovate, and thrive in ways previously unimaginable. Mongolia’s embrace of wireless fiber optics stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovative thinking in telecommunications – one laser link at a time.
